We recently moved from Orlando to the Tampa area of Central Florida. After many years in Orlando, we had accumulated many items; it’s actually really surprising just how much a small family of four can collect! While moving can be a pain and takes a lot of work, it’s important to protect your belongings as you move them from one place to another. One of my concerns during the move was that our mattresses would get dirty or torn. I certainly didn’t want our new Serta iSeries Trump Trevi mattress to get damaged! Luckily, my husband prepared well – check out our tips for how to protect your mattress when moving to a new place.
How to Protect Your Mattress When Moving: 5 Tips for Moving Your Mattress
1. Wrap Your Mattress
Using painter’s plastic, you can wrap your mattress to protect it from dirt and water. Completely wrap your mattress all around and consider reinforcing it with shrink wrap around the edges and corners. Covering your mattress in plastic will help protect it during a move – we did the same and our mattresses survived the move without getting wet or dirty.
2. Use Blankets Under Mattress
To further protect your mattress, you can place old blankets or comforters underneath the mattress. This will also help you in sliding the mattress in and out of your moving truck rather than carrying it by hand. (Mattresses can be rather heavy, after all.)
3. Consider Renting a Covered Moving Truck
Instead of renting an open trailer or using a pick-up truck, consider renting an enclosed moving truck. This will ensure that should any bad weather occur, your mattress and other possessions will go undamaged.
4. Check the Weather
If you’re unable to rent a covered moving truck, then be sure to check the weather before moving your mattress. Even so, cover your mattress using a tarp to help protect it from water.
5. Place Mattress Between Furniture for Double the Purpose
Placing your mattress in between other furniture – between a dresser and table, for example – will serve double the purpose. Not only will it ensure that your mattress stands upright, but the mattress will act as a cushion for your other furniture.

This is wonderful advice. Mattresses often are handled carelessly when they should be given the utmost support and attention. Remember, this is where you rest and relax. Treat it as delicately as you would your other furniture or you risk ruining your once comfortable bed.
