As my baby girl leaves her baby days behind and grows older, taking care of her skin has become an added part of her self-hygiene routine. I’ve begun to teach her how to wash her face properly using a face wash and that moisturizing is important for her skin. At nearly eight years of age, she’s already begun to sprout a few bumps and pimples on her face, which of course, has brought about a few questions.
Something I want to prevent is her head being filled with old wives tales or beauty myths. Growing up, I heard my fair share of them – from putting toothpaste on pimples to avoiding chocolate and caffeine – I have no clue if any of them were true or worked. So, I prefer that she care for her skin properly by washing and moisturizing daily and using SPF products when out in the sun for a long time. I also tell her not to pick at the bumps, something I had trouble doing when growing up.
One piece of beauty advice I was surprised about is that washing your face with hot water may actually be bad for your skin, something I wasn’t aware of since usually the advice is that it helps open your pores. According to Eucerin, “steam from hot water can help soften the skin to remove hardened dirt and oils, but hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils.” They suggest that you wash your face with lukewarm water instead and of course, moisturize after cleansing.
To help you get on track with taking care of your skin, you can receive a free sample of Eucerin Daily Protection SPF Moisturizing Lotion (face or body) by taking the Skin First pledge on their Facebook page. Plus, you can enter the giveaway below for a chance to win more Eucerin products!

Toothpaste on zits was always one I heard growing up too! I tried it a few times as a teen, but it never worked for me.
A beauty myth I heard growing up was to brush your hair a hundred times before bed to make it shiny. If using the right type of brush, this does help to redistribute the oil from your scalp into the hair, but brushing your hair excessively/more than necessary isn’t good for it.

My mother told me that I should always wash my face with soft face soap and apply face cream daily using three fingers so it is applying a softer touch. Her tips have always stayed with me and I feel I have great skin for which people usually compliment. Now as a grown woman I have new tips of my own that I feel are great to know in order to keep that clean and soft skin looking fresh everyday.
Friends (not my mom) told me that my acne was caused by me being dirty. So I used to wash my face several times a day (like 4-5). That did nothing but dry it out and cause more problems. Esp because I didn’t use lotion because I thought that made my face dirty. True story.

I learned that you can rub a scar and it would minimize its appearance. Not so true!
My tip was more on hair care. I have always had very long hair. Down to my knees. I tried the brushing it 100 strokes before bedtime, I actually think I heard that on the brady bunch or somewhere (My mom never gave beauty tips) it did not work. It only made my hair oily and then it required more washing and that was not an easy task.
