This summer, my baby girl will primarily be home with me. It’s been that way for a few summers – we do home camp combined with a week or two of day camp to fit her interests. It’s honestly worked out well. She keeps busy with a variety of activities while I work and we also plan periodic outings.
Many of her summer home camp activities are educational, with daily reading being a part of her routine. Another item we added is a daily writing prompt. It doesn’t have to be lengthy, but it’s a good way to keep her thinking, wondering, and practicing her writing skills. Each day, she chooses from a list of prompts I’ve provided her and writes a few sentences or paragraph. Then, she shares with me, which often leads to a nice discussion. I’ve put together 60 summer writing prompts – enough for two months of summer writing – and have offered them as a free printable as well! Go ahead and try these writing prompts with your kids this summer and keep summer learning alive!

My girl is nine and about to enter fourth grade, so these writing prompts may not all work for your child, depending on his/her age. However, I find many of them can be turned into questions to help spark a conversation with a child of any age. I’ve done that with my four-year-old and have had some fun talks with him! You could also adjust some of the writing prompts to fit your child’s age, preferences, or current situation. The idea is just to get them thinking and writing!
