As we enter the summer months, chances are you’re probably going to have a picnic or two with your kids and family. Even with the super-hot weather we have during the summer, the kids still ask to have picnics. It’s hard to say no to such an innocent request, so we make the best of the weather and enjoy our time as a family. I’m sure you have a favorite picnic spot in your area – one of ours is a local park, though we often picnic at the beach too. However, we have a fun little twist on location that often helps us in making the kids happy, yet also saves us from the heat. Check out our tips for a picnic with kids, so you too can enjoy some family fun and create memories!
5 Tips for a Fun Picnic with Kids
1. Have kid-friendly finger food: Picnic food can be anything from sandwiches and chips to chicken and potato salad, but with kids, it’s best to have finger food that’s easy for them to eat. Try mini sandwiches, cut-up fruit, and other small food that your kids enjoy. It’ll lessen the mess and allow your kids to eat with confidence!
2. Be sure to provide plenty of fluids: When outside, especially in hot weather, it’s important to provide plenty of fluids. You could serve individual drinks and store them in a small, soft-sided cooler that’s easy to carry. Or, you could fill a beverage cooler with water or lemonade to keep the drinks flowing for the length of your picnic! We recently purchased an Igloo Sport 1/2 gallon jug and Igloo 2 gallon beverage cooler at Walmart – both worked great for our recent picnic!
3. Try having a picnic at home: This is our little trick for avoiding extreme heat, yet making the kids happy with a picnic. We’ve had picnics right in our family room floor, as well as on our back porch. You could also have your picnic on the grass in your yard for a little more authentic picnic experience. The kids will love their picnic either way!
4. Invest in a reusable picnic blanket: Our portable, reusable picnic blanket has come in very handy over the years. It folds up small, making it easy to carry or pack with your picnic items. Just like this classic red and white checkered blanket from Walmart, ours has a waterproof back, which is great for damp grass and makes it easy to clean.
5. Apply an insect repellent: In addition to sunscreen to protect your family from the sun, applying an insect repellent is also a good idea. This is especially helpful if having your picnic in a forested area or near the water. There’s nothing worse than itchy mosquito bites to ruin your fun picnic!
Having a picnic with your kids is a great summer activity and one they’ll truly love. With a bit of preparation, it can be an easy, no-stress, fun family outing that will create wonderful memories! Be sure to check out the various coolers available at Walmart to find the right one for your next family picnic!
