My 8-year-old’s third grade school supply list this year included plenty of notebooks and composition books. A caveat, though, was that all the notebooks had to be solid colors and she could not label any of them. This was because the school uses a system called community sharing where they collect all the children’s school supplies on meet-the-teacher day (or the first day of school) and the teacher then distributes them out to the children during the first week of school after labeling them with the subjects each notebook will be used for. It’s a great system for avoiding competition among students and helping make things more equal in the classroom, but it also removes any sense of individuality.
For example, my daughter loves bright colors and prints, but ended up with a black notebook for her independent reading journal. With a little creativity, though, we took care of that and decorated a few more of her school supplies (plus some for her younger brother) using Duck Brand and Sharpie products. How to Customize School Supplies with Duck Tape & Sharpie Markers
Customizing school supplies to make them your own is super simple! First, using the very convenient Duck Tape Sheets, cover the front of your notebook. One Duck Tape Sheet pretty much covers the entire front of a standard spiral notebook or composition notebook, but you may need to cut and fold down a little of the sheet on the backside of the cover.
Then, using either Color, Printed, or Mini Rolls Duck Tape, add shapes, labels, or designs to your notebook cover. I added labels to my kids’ notebooks to identify what each notebook would be used for. For my daughter, since the Duck Tape Sheet was already a busy peacock design, I went with a solid chrome color for the label; for my 3-year-old son, I used a black Duck Tape Sheet since that is one of his favorite colors and then used the glow in the dark mini roll for the label (which he was thoroughly entertained by).
Finally, using Sharpie markers (pick your preference that will stand out against your Duck Tape color) write over the Duck Tape to draw even more designs, write your kids’ names, the subject for the notebook, or anything else you’d like to add to their school supplies! The possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
I saw lots of ways to use Duck Tape and Sharpie items during my visit to the Walmart headquarters back in June when representatives from each brand showed us Walmart Moms how to have fun with their products this school year!
