My kids have dressed up in a variety of Halloween costumes over the years – from Yoda and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for my baby boy to a cheerleader and Cleopatra for my girl and plenty of other characters. Last year my girl decided she didn’t want to buy a Halloween costume and opted to dress as a ghost (complete with the bed sheet). This began the DIY Halloween costumes trend at our house, because this year both kids want to make their own costumes! So, with supplies from Walmart, we’re beginning to put our DIY Mummy and DIY Zombie Ghost costumes together. Check out our ideas below!
DIY Zombie Ghost Halloween Kids’ Costume
My baby boy has a fun idea for his Halloween costume this year and it comes with a sweet origin story. As a 4-year-old, he’s still a little scared of certain aspects of Halloween, so he told me: “If I dress as something scary, then I won’t be scared on Halloween!” Isn’t that the cutest? His choice was to dress as a zombie ghost – which you guessed it, is a mix of a zombie and a ghost. What we’ve come up with so far is that he’ll dress as a zombie and his face painting will combine the look of a zombie and a glowing ghost.
Being that my boy often wants to dress “handsome” (that’s what he calls it when he wears fancy clothes), we decided his zombie outfit would be a dress shirt and tie with dress pants. We found a great shirt and tie combo on clearance in the boys’ section of Walmart! Of course, we’re going to cut and rip his shirt and pants to give the clothes more of a zombie look. To complete his DIY Halloween costume, we found glow-in-the-dark face paint and a zombie tattoo in Walmart’s seasonal area that will help us give my boy a zombie (glowing) ghost look.
DIY Mummy Halloween Kids’ Costume
My girl wants to dress as a mummy for Halloween this year and thought it would be funny to wrap toilet paper around herself for her costume. However, toilet paper isn’t the sturdiest material for trick-or-treating, so we convinced her we could do the mummy look in a different way. We found beige colored leggings and a thin blouse in the girls’ department of Walmart and decided to create mummy wraps from a similar-colored bed sheet we found in the home department. For shoes, we’re considering these lug sole boots (pictured above, only $13.92!) that we can partly wrap as well, but that she can also use after Halloween. To complete her DIY mummy Halloween costume, we will use white face paint we found in the Halloween section.
DIY Halloween costumes for kids don’t have to be hard. If you don’t sew (like me), you can still put together a fun DIY kids Halloween costume for your child by grabbing different items from various areas of your Walmart store to help you complete the look. From clothes, fabrics, and craft items, to make-up and Halloween-specific items, you can surely find enough to create ghoulish, scary, or just plain cute DIY Halloween costumes your kids will love!
