Star Wars Day (May the 4th) might be a month away still, but today is like a precursor with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Blu-ray and DVD! If you’re a Star Wars fan, then I’m sure today is a big day in your household and like any big movie release day, you’re probably planning a fun movie night with the family! We’ve been having a lot of Star Wars fun with the kids since receiving a complimentary early copy of Star Wars Episode VII, so I wanted to share a few ideas for how you too can get into the Star Wars spirit today or any day. See how easy it is to have your own Star Wars movie watching party with kids and enjoy The Force Awakens with your family!
#ShowUsYourForce: How to Have a Star Wars Movie Watching Party with Kids
1. Pick up the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray and DVD combo (of course!)
The latest installment in the Star Wars universe, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, just released on Blu-ray and DVD today April 5th! You’ll definitely want to head to your local Walmart to get the special packaging on the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD combo (with cute BB-8 on the front!) and the collectible Galactic Connexions Trading Discs inside, which are exclusive to Walmart!
2. Grab fun Star Wars themed party supplies
Set the scene with Star Wars plates, napkins, cups, and other The Force Awakens party supplies available at Walmart! I picked up a couple of different sized plates in varying designs, napkins, the plastic cups (which my kids love to reuse), and coordinating black plastic ware. There were hanging decorations, table covers, and much more, so be sure to browse your local store and check Walmart.com as well!
3. Serve easy, force-filled snacks
If you search around, you will find tons of wonderful Star Wars snack ideas to serve at your Star Wars movie watching party! From cupcakes and other sweet treats to fruits and veggies shaped like your favorite Star Wars characters, there’s so many fun and creative options you can use for your party! I kept it simple and had the kids create TIE fighters using chocolate graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate frosting (an idea I saw in many variations on Pinterest)!
4. Let the kids craft
Providing an activity or two before the movie begins is always a good idea with little ones! In addition to the Star Wars The Force Awakens stickers I found at my Walmart, I also set out some construction paper for my kids to have a little Star Wars origami fun. Following the instructions from Tom Angleberger’s The Strange Case of Origami Yoda book and his accompanying Art2-D2’s Guide to Folding and Doodling, my kids created Yoda and Princess Leia finger puppets. Want to share the fun with your kids? My 10-year-old made a couple of videos for your kids to make Star Wars finger puppets too! Check out the how-to videos below and be sure to check out Tom Angleberger’s books for more Stars Wars fun – my girl loves them and my boy is just being introduced to them!

5. Enjoy the movie
Sit back, relax your feet, and enjoy the awesomeness of The Force Awakens! Again, you’ll definitely want to pick up the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD combo from Walmart because there’s just so much going on in the movie that watching it once is not enough. We saw it in theaters and since receiving our complimentary copy last week, we’ve already seen it two more times – and we’re still catching new moments in the movie! (Plus, a hint: captions help with this movie! There’s a lot of whispering that you want to hear.) So, go! Get your Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie today and have a fun movie watching party with the kids!
