My kids love a good treasure or scavenger hunt. My nine-year-old often creates them for her four-year-old brother when they’re looking for something to do on the weekends. She quickly puts together a few clues, sets up a “treasure” he’ll enjoy, and lets him have fun looking for each clue, as she cheers him on! That’s why I knew that a great St. Patrick’s Day activity for them would be an in-home St. Patrick’s Day treasure hunt. It’s simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers to have fun with, but still a blast for older kids. Combining the search for gold at the end of the rainbow with the fun of a clue-based treasure hunt, this St. Patrick’s Day activity for kids is one your family is sure to enjoy!
To make it easy for you to put together a St. Patrick’s Day treasure hunt in your own home, I’m providing a free printable with St. Patrick’s Day themed clues. All you have to do is print, cut out, and have fun hiding them around your home. You’ll want to put together a quick “treasure” for the kids to find at the end, as well. How to Create an In-Home St. Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt
You’ll want to create a treasure for the kids to find at the end of their treasure hunt. This could be anything you know they’ll like, such as goodie bags filled with candy and trinkets, a pot of chocolate gold coins, or a present wrapped in yellow or green paper. Think of iconic St. Patrick’s Day symbols and colors and use them to put your treasure hunt together! Take advantage of the party and gift section at your Walmart to find various items to use and be sure to also take a peek at the seasonal section.
Suggested items and materials:
- Treasure hunt clues – print out our free St. Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt clues or create your own!
- Plastic gold coins
- Chocolate gold coins or gold-wrapped candies
- Yellow and green tissue paper
- Black cauldron
- Cardboard rainbow
- St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes (for the treat)
For our St. Patrick’s Day treasure hunt, I put together a couple of goodie bags for my kids filled with chocolate, pencils, and a few other St. Patrick’s Day themed goodies. Using green treat bags and St. Patrick’s Day stickers, I decorated their goodie bags and added coordinating tissue paper. Since I was unable to find a black cauldron, I used a green basket to hold their goodie bags. I added a few extra decorations around their bags, including yellow tissue paper, foam shamrocks, and extra gold-wrapped chocolate candies. It’s simple, but eye-catching, so I know the kids will love finding their goodie bag treasure at the end of their treasure hunt!
I hope this inspires some St. Patrick’s Day fun with the kids for a simple, yet great way to spend time together as a family. Customize your in-home St. Patrick’s Day treasure hunt to fit your family’s style and your kids’ ages. The point is to just have fun! Be sure to also browse the apparel section of your Walmart for cute St. Patrick’s Day shirts for the entire family!
