This summer, I have a rising Kindergartener (I KNOW!) and rising 5th grader (again, WHAT?!) off from school for a little more than 8 weeks. My baby boy just wrapped up preK and celebrated with an adorable preK graduation last week. His sister finished up her 4th grade year and both of them had wonderful school years full of learning and fun! We definitely want to keep feeding their brains over the summer and be sure they’re ready for school come August, but we also want their summer to be full of fun. That’s why we’ve come up with what we’re calling our #8WeeksofSummerFun! (It’s basically an at-home mommy camp since they won’t be attending summer camp this year.) The kids and I are pretty excited and truthfully, it’ll be helpful in my quest to keep up with work goals and deadlines as well while entertaining them this summer. After all, they may be on summer vacation, but I’m not. Check out what we have planned!
#8WeeksofSummerFun: Beating Summer Boredom with Themed Summer Fun & Learning!
The kids and I sat down and brainstormed on topics they wanted to either learn more about or just wished to explore and have fun with. Here are the 8 themes we chose for our summer:
- Star Wars Galactic Fun
- Heroes: Real Life vs Comics
- Jungle Animal Safari
- A Look at Slavery
- Your Inner Artist
- Wonder Water World
- Gearing Up for Robots
- Learn to Code
Our themed weeks will be simple, yet fun. Each week, we’ll read books related to the topic, do arts & crafts, and have fun with activities that fit our theme! Some weeks we’ll have an outing related to the theme as well (i.e., a visit to the zoo for jungle animal week or a trip to a museum for art week). The idea is for the kids to learn while having fun, be creative and entertained, and at the same time, limit their screen time.
So far this week we’ve taken a trip to the library to gather Star Wars books and prepare for the upcoming weeks. The kids have been having fun creating construction paper Yoda and Ewok headbands, making pom-pom blasters, folding origami Star Wars characters, and building LEGO lightsabers! In the evenings, we’ve been sitting down as a family to watch one Star Wars movie each night – by Saturday, we’ll have watched all of Episodes I-VII!
