My baby girl finished first grade last week. Summer has officially begun for her, which means a lot of fun is in store for us, but it also means I have to figure out how to keep her busy and entertained so I can work. After all, just because she’s on vacation, doesn’t mean I am – as a business owner with a home office, I still need to get my work done regardless of her being home for two months.
Keep Kids Busy and Engaged This Summer with a Summer Learning and Fun Kit
Since my girl loves to read, do puzzles, brain teasers, and be creative, I thought a good way for her to stay busy on days we’re home is through her very own summer learning and fun kit. I proposed the idea to her and she thought it was great, excited to go shopping for her supplies at Walmart. She helped me pick out a variety of items for her summer kit, from versatile craft supplies to a brain teasers workbook. We kept in mind some of the general arts and crafts supplies we already had at home, plus math and science workbooks she brought home from school, in order to combine them with our purchased items. Check out what we bought to put together her summer learning and fun kit!
Items purchased:
- Brain teasers workbook
- Cursive dry erase practice pad
- Poster board and stencils
- Neon and glitter craft pom poms
- Wooden jumbo craft sticks
- Magnetic tape
- Print design duct tape
- Craft pipe cleaners
- Dry erase markers
As you can see we combined our purchased items with glue, colored pencils, drawing pads and notebooks she already had at home, in order to create a go-to learning and crafts kit for the summer. Having all the items in one bin will help my girl be able to pull out her summer kit whenever she’d like so she can practice learning her cursive writing, create crafts, draw, or have fun with brain teasers.
My daughter enjoyed putting together her summer learning kit, which I think is important to note – involving your child in the process and letting him or her pick out items they truly like and will use is key, otherwise the kit may just sit in the closet unused. I know this is a kit my daughter will use over and over because she loves to use her imagination and truly loves learning. As we put together her summer learning kit, she even went as far as to say, “When summer begins, school doesn’t have to end!”
What are some fun ways your kids will stay busy while home this summer?
