The 2014 Olympic Winter Games begin this weekend with the opening ceremony kicking off Sochi 2014 this Friday night! This is a great opportunity to explore lots of different countries and cultures with children – there will literally be a parade of countries on your TV screen with flags and athletes from each being represented! Even toddlers and preschoolers can have fun exploring other countries in the form of an easy Winter Olympics craft! Check out this super simple Winter Olympics craft for preschoolers where they get to make their own country flags using basic craft supplies found at your local Walmart – it doesn’t require many steps either!

How to Make Sochi Winter Olympics Country Flags Craft with Preschoolers:
Since this craft is meant to be easy and simple so that toddlers and preschoolers can manage to make it, it’s best if you do a lot of the prep work yourself so they don’t get frustrated. Begin by drawing the flags’ designs onto your poster board or card stock with the pencil. You can see below where I outlined the designs of Russia’s and France’s flags using a ruler, and similarly, drew the circle of Japan’s flag using a small bowl.
Next, cut out felt pieces in the appropriate colors for each section of your flags. For our Russia and France flags, I needed varying widths and lengths of red and blue felt. For Japan, I simply needed a red circle. For the white sections of the flags, I chose to leave them as they are, but you could certainly cut out pieces of white felt as well and provide your preschooler more gluing practice.
With your materials prepped, your preschooler is now ready to make his Winter Olympics country flags! Provide him or her with the pre-cut felt pieces and traced poster board flags. With a little guidance, have your preschooler glue the pieces in the proper order to create his or her flags. It’s a good idea to have a reference photo handy of what the flag should look like and talk about the colors of the flag, the name of the country, and any other information you think your preschooler may be interested in learning about the country as he or she creates each flag!
We created three flags for our Winter Olympics country flags craft time – Russia in honor of Sochi the host city, France, and Japan – but, you can choose any countries you like. The idea is to expose kids to other countries and cultures prior to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games, so when you watch on Friday, they’ll recognize a few flags and countries!
