As we work on decorating various areas of our home, we have yet to do any work on the yard. We are lucky that our new home includes a large backyard and while we have grand plans for it, other areas of our home have a higher priority at the moment. That’s why I was excited about the latest home decor project for which I partnered with Walmart this month, since it gave me a chance to add a little color to our yard, just in time for the summer months! Check out how you can transform items you already own or a nice thrift-store find with a simple coat of Rust-Oleum paint!
Easy DIY Summer Planter for Your Kids’ Garden
For this project, we received a white ceramic garden lantern with a glazed finish and were tasked to transform it with Rust-Oleum spray paint or stain. I noticed the lantern said it could also be used as a planter, which was perfect for starting a small kids’ garden in our new yard! Thinking of how my tween daughter loves bold colors, I chose a nice bright pink for her, which would also add lots of color to our yard for the summer months. Here’s how to easily create your own DIY summer planter for a kids’ garden!
Materials Needed
- Better Homes & Garden Lantern (Can also be used as a planter!)
- Rust-Oleum American Accents Ultra Cover 2x Spray Paint – Choose your favorite summer color!
- Newspaper or drop cloth
How to Create a Bold Color Summer Planter for a Kids’ Garden!
- Wipe lantern/planter clean to be sure there’s no dust or dirt on it.
- Lay out newspaper or a drop cloth in your garage, patio, or a large ventilated area where you can spray paint.
- Spray paint your planter in a back and forth motion to evenly coat it with the new color, turning it as you spray, until the entire planter is covered.
- Let it dry for about an hour (or more to be sure) and enjoy in your garden!
Isn’t that so easy? I was surprised by how well the color took considering the ceramic had a glazed finish, but it really coated well with just one coat of paint! I did go back and touch-up a few spots I missed on the first coat, but overall, the one coat of paint was sufficient. I also considered using a clear gloss over the paint (also by Rust-Oleum), but then decided I liked the matte look of the planter as it was and left it alone. You can do that extra step if you choose, depending on your taste and needs! And remember, this is also a lantern, so you could add a light inside and have a beautiful decorative piece for your walkway or yard!
What color would you or your kids choose for their DIY summer planter?
