As we continue to work on organizing our home and moving everything into its place in an effort to have more efficiency and order, one area that we want to improve is our laundry system. Laundry is the bane of our existence since it seems to never end. Though we tend to wash once a week versus daily like other households, it’s still a lot to deal with. There’s mounds upon mounds of clothes (at least that’s how it feels!) with clothes of all sizes for a family of four. In fact, it seems like the laundry ends up being a catalyst for messes in other areas of the house! That’s why this month, I figured I’d try to help the situation with a few additions. Read on to see a few tips for keeping the laundry mess under control – I’m hoping this makes a difference in our house!
3 Simple Tips for Managing the Laundry Chaos
1. Set up a (small) hamper or basket in the kids’ bathroom: I’m adding a small basket in the kids’ bathroom closet for them to use as a hamper. I purposely picked a small one in order to keep them from overfilling their hamper. This will force them to routinely empty it and sort the clothes into the divided hamper we have in our laundry room.
2. Keep a laundry basket in an accessible spot: I found an awesome collapsible laundry basket at my local Walmart that’s perfect for carrying the laundry, but can easily be stored under a bed or in a closet. Since it collapses and is easy to store, I plan to keep this new laundry basket in my bedroom where I can grab it in-between laundry days to help carry clothes back and forth from the laundry room downstairs.
3. Hang mesh laundry wash bags near the hamper: I’m going to try hanging two mesh wash bags on the wall next to the kids’ new hamper so they can put dirty socks in individual bags. When the kids sort their clothes in the laundry room, the bags can remain intact, so we can wash and dry their socks in the bags. This way we keep them together and avoid having to match up a bunch of mixed-up socks! (I actually saw this idea on Pinterest.)
I’m hoping these simple changes will help us better manage the chaos that is laundry. One of my hopes is that this will encourage the kids to keep on top of their laundry and eventually even transition them towards washing their own clothes. (Cross your fingers for us that it works!)
