As a family, we’ve always encouraged reading and filled our home with plenty of books for our children. From birth, we’ve made sure to read to them, taken trips to the public library, and in general, tried our best to instill a love of books and reading. I’m proud to say that we’ve been very successful, as both our 6th grader and 1st grader are avid readers. One thing that has helped is to have a home library, so we can always have books accessible for reading.
With spring cleaning season coming up, it’s the perfect time for us to revisit our home library and give it a bit of reorganization. By ensuring our home library is organized, we can create a great reading space to promote reading year-round in our home. See how the P-touch D200G Label Maker helped us organize our home library and make it into a truly great reading space our children can take advantage of on a daily basis!
How to Organize Your Home Library and Encourage Family Reading
1. Separate Books by Genre
Gather all your books and divide them up by genre. Choose categories that make sense for your family: classics, toddler board books, non-fiction, multicultural stories, bilingual, poetry, chapter books, and any other genres you prefer. Using the P-touch D200G Label Maker, label each shelf accordingly so books will be easy to find and easy to put back in their proper place. Since the P-touch has so many fun features to choose from – 8 fonts, 95 frames, over 600 symbols, plus a variety of colored tapes you can purchase – you can really customize each label to fit the genre and your home library’s look and feel!
2. Provide Reading Accessories
Reading accessories can help add to your family’s reading environment. Providing items such as bookmarks, a reading log for tracking books read, and perhaps even a reading light can help children have everything in one place. Label these as well to keep everything organized!
3. Create a Comfortable Reading Space
My kids love reading in the oddest positions, sometimes even sitting upside down! A comfortable reading space – one with cushions, blankets, and the like – can create a fun and enticing reading space.
Remember, the key is to encourage your family to read regularly. My kids often rediscover previously forgotten books simply through the process of reorganizing our home library. They then make our home library a go-to spot in our home! A comfortable, inviting, organized space that has easily accessible books and accessories is sure to encourage even reluctant readers to sit down and open up a book. It’s amazing what some organization will do!
How would you organize your home library? In what other ways would you use personalized labels to create an inviting reading space in your home?
