I told my husband that I wanted to celebrate my upcoming 35th birthday in a big way. I wasn’t sure what I wanted exactly, but just felt an urge to “do something big for my birthday.” Being the incredible husband that he is, he responded with, “Want to go to Puerto Rico?” So, a couple of weeks later, and we’re headed to my beautiful island for a quick family trip! The kids are very excited – we all are, actually! I can’t wait to have my baby boy see Puerto Rico for the first time and remind baby girl of some of the places she saw on her first visit to the island six years ago. It’s going to be great.
Being that our trip is only a few days long, I’m hoping to squeeze in as many activities as we can. Showing the kids some of the must-see attractions in Puerto Rico and experiencing authentic Puerto Rican food is definitely on my list for this trip. We’ll have to see how much we can get done, but I know that if I don’t make a full list, it’ll be harder to achieve our goal. So, here is our personal wish list for things to see and do in Puerto Rico!
Our Trip to Puerto Rico: Must-Do Wish List
- Visit El Yunque and swim in a waterfall
- Explore Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan)
- Feed the pigeons in El Parque de Las Palomas (Pigeon Park)
- Visit El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro)
- Enjoy a feast in Guavate (AKA the Pork Highway)
- Relax on the beach
- Eat lots of delicious Puerto Rican food and treats:
-
- Alcapurrias
- Bacalaitos – I’m hoping the spot near the top of El Yunque is still there
- Pastelillos
- Chicharrón y pan – The city of Bayamón is known for this
- Pinchos
- Coco frio
- Limber
- Piragüas
- Helados
There’s so much more to do in Puerto Rico, but the amount of time we’ll be on the island is not nearly long enough to explore more. I’m just hoping the kids will get a good dose of their heritage and we can create wonderful memories to keep the conversations about their family history and culture going. We’ll just have to ensure our next trip to Puerto Rico is a longer one so we can enjoy all that La Isla del Encanto (The Island of Enchantment) has to offer!
