Next Sunday is the big game day and I’m sure many of you will be watching with snacks in hand! While wings, chips, and dips of all varieties are customary game day food, I thought I would share a fun game day appetizer idea that’s a little different. It’s still finger-food and shareable, a must for game time recipes, plus it’s super easy to put together, but the main ingredient is one you may not think about when it comes to game day food. Taking from the taco bar idea, where guests can build their own tacos, I replaced the taco shells with tostones (fried green plantains) to create a tostones bar for your game time food selection! Read on to get the details of this easy game day recipe idea!
Tostones Bar: Game Time Recipe Idea
Ingredients
- Tostones – You can certainly make your own tostones from fresh green plantains, but for a shortcut, you can find tostones in the frozen section of your local Walmart.
- Salt
- Shredded chicken – Try already-cooked rotisserie chicken from the Walmart deli that you can then shred!
- Shredded pork
- Lettuce, shredded
- Tomatoes, diced
- Black beans – The Wild Oats Marketplace Organic brand is only 92 cents per can!
- Any other toppings of your preference (i.e., onions, black olives, sour cream, etc.)
Directions
- Fry tostones in a deep fryer or pan for about 10 minutes, flipping mid-way. Alternatively, you could follow package instructions.
- Remove tostones from hot oil and place on paper towel-lined plate. Sprinkle with salt and let cool.
- Spread out all ingredients, including cooked tostones, for assembling.
- Top tostones with toppings of your choice. Some of our creations included: chicken and tomatoes, pork and black beans, and a vegetarian option of black beans, lettuce, and tomatoes. Create as many as you like!
I love tostones and eat them all by themselves or alongside a meal of rice and beans. However, this tostones bar idea came out great and added wonderful flavors to the plantains I already love! I think it’s a fun spin on finger food and an easy game time recipe idea that doesn’t require a lot of work. Plus, it’s delicious!
