The year 2014 saw Universal Orlando open several new venues including of course, an expansion centered around a certain wizard. Perhaps you heard about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley? Aside from the mania that came with Harry Potter, we eagerly anticipated the opening of a rather unique sushi/burger fusion restaurant. The wait is finally over. The Cowfish officially opened recently and we were honored to be among its very first guests. Read on to get our initial thoughts on this latest addition to Universal CityWalk.
First a little backstory is probably in order. The Cowfish originates from North Carolina and so it was there that a Universal Orlando VP stumbled upon the establishment after he and his wife couldn’t decide between sushi or burgers. After experiencing the fusion of sushi and burgers, referred to as “burgushi”, the VP reached out to the founders to sell them on the idea of bringing their one-of-a-kind concept to Universal CityWalk.
The Cowfish is playful with not only its menu, but also the ambiance. Bright colors pop throughout the multi-story venue providing eye candy throughout. A real fish, affectionately called Buttercup, embodies the logo representing another quirky aspect to the atmosphere.
If you’re more of a sushi purist or prefer your hamburgers without a raw fish accompaniment, you need not worry about the offerings here at The Cowfish. The restaurant has a full fledged sushi bar as well as a number of different juicy hamburgers to accommodate all types of palates. You also shouldn’t fret about your kids as The Cowfish has thought of them as well with options for the most picky of eaters. In fact the restaurant has interactive monitors for kids (and adults) to enjoy games!
Though The Cowfish offers menu items for the less adventurous, we do encourage you to experiment with their various burgushi offerings. The creative dish titles, like Buffaloooo–shi Roll and The High Class Hillbilly, match the creative ingredient mixture. You will see the likes of bison, Angus beef, and pulled pork in the form of sushi rolls. You’re likely familiar with surf and turf but here you will find lobster and filet mignon alongside one another in a sushi roll. Is it strange? Yes. Is it delicious? Absolutely.
The fun continues as dessert takes on the appearance of a sushi roll with the appropriately titled Yummy Roll. Delicious as that may be, we have a special place in our heart for East West, a key lime cheesecake paired with vanilla ice cream. This may sound simple in comparison with the main entrees but we can assure you that it certainly won’t disappoint.
With the opening of The Cowfish, Universal Orlando caps a busy year filled with several new additions to its lineup of attractions and dining venues. Be sure to expand your culinary horizons with a trip to this sushi burger bar!
Disclosure: We were provided complimentary menu samplings to experience The Cowfish at Universal CityWalk. All thoughts and opinions are our own.
