I know the toddler and preschool years can be tough as a parent. Believe me, I’m still in the middle of it myself with my four-year-old baby boy! It’s hard being a preschooler – you’re officially a “big boy,” yet at every turn, you’re told what to do or what you CAN’T do. I do understand it, but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier on us as parents.
While I still have trying moments with my baby boy, I have found one sure way to get him to do what I ask, without any fuss! In fact, it’s a fun game for him, which is why he is happy to oblige. It works just about very time and it has definitely eased my frustration. See what’s been working for us and let me know if you think it’ll work with your preschooler!
One Way I Get My Preschooler To Listen
In an effort to lessen moments of frustration with my four-year-old, I started thinking about the one thing he truly loves to do – run. That boy can run all day if I let him. He also absolutely loves to have races and make anything and everything a race.
“Mommy, I bet I can brush my hair faster than you and Sissy.”
“Mommy, I was the first to finish my food.”
“Mommy, I beat you. You’re still washing your hands!”
Using his love for racing, it occurred to me that perhaps if I make just about everything into a game or race, he’d go for it. And guess what? It worked!
“Baby boy, go use the potty one last time before we leave, please.”
“But, I don’t waaaant to.”
“How about we see who can go to the potty the fastest? I have to go too. You ready?”
“I’m going to beat you, mommy!” he screams out as he runs to the bathroom, laughing.
And he does. He does win our race. Which is just fine, because I win too, with one less meltdown.
What fun game does your preschooler love that you can use to your advantage and avoid meltdowns?
