Sometimes in parenting, you need a little help to motivate your kids or reward them for good behavior. This is especially true for younger children like my four-year-old son. Something that seems to work in his preschool class is their treasure box. Every Friday, kids who had good behavior throughout the week are able to choose an item from the class treasure box, which is filled with small toys, books, and other miscellaneous knick knacks. My son is always excited for school on Friday because of this!
Taking from his school’s idea, I thought a paper bag treasure chest filled with small treats would be great for rewarding his good behavior at home too! Since this coming Sunday, July 12 is Paper Bag Day, this paper bag kids craft is perfect for sharing with you! I hope it helps you have a fun craft time with your preschooler or young schooler and encourages your little ones to keep up their good behavior! Read on to see how to make this easy paper bag craft!
Paper Bag Treasure Chest Kids Craft
Materials Needed:
- 1 paper lunch bag
- Yellow construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Markers (Black, yellow, and gold work best)
- 1 pipe cleaner (optional)
How to Make a Paper Bag Treasure Chest for Kids
1. Cut top of paper bag, starting about an inch down, into a curve. Fold down.
2. Draw chest buckle across the middle of bag, right under the folded-down flap. Be sure to draw across the back of bag too!
3. Draw a “strap” down each side of paper bag, creating the illusion of the chest’s leather straps and studs. Again, be sure to also draw straps on back of bag.
4. Cut out a small square of construction paper and draw a keyhole on it.
5. Fill bag with small toys and/or treats that your child will like.
6. Glue keyhole to front of bag and seal closed.
7. For extra fun, shape pipe cleaner into a skeleton key for “opening” the treasure chest.
Your kids will have fun making their paper bag treasure chest and it’s sure to get them excited for future rewards! If you want to have more fun with paper bags for Paper Bag Day and beyond, check out these ideas for paper bag crafts for kids!
