Now playing in theaters is another retelling of a classic Disney film. Pete’s Dragon tells the story of a young boy who befriends a dragon called Elliot. What bond will be greater: Pete’s connection to his fellow humans or his friend of the forest, Elliot the dragon?
Walt Disney Studios has made a point lately of reaching into their famous Disney vault to find classic family films that can be reimagined for a newer generation. Following on the heels of The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon is a live retelling of an animated picture from the 1970s.
For those unfamiliar with the story, or perhaps need a refresher, Pete’s Dragon begins with a young boy who is torn apart from his family. Lost in the woods, Pete encounters a magical creature who he names Elliot. Over the course of six years, Pete and Elliot share a close bond that is tested when humans begins clearing out the forest. Here is where Pete meets Grace, a forest ranger who aims to protect the forest and all its inhabitants. Unbeknownst to Grace that includes a young boy and a green dragon that her father had long told her about. Soon Pete must choose between reconnecting with people of his own kind or continuing to live alongside his childhood friend, Elliot.
Bryce Dallas Howard who portrays Grace, does a commendable job of contributing emotional depth with her character’s maternal instincts. Through the usage of some impressive computer generated imagery, Elliot the dragon also provides tender moments throughout the film, solidifying the human-dragon bond.
Pete’s Dragon is a heartwarming story that has appeal to younger kids (about six and under). There really aren’t any scary situations that should be of concern to parents. Therefore, it’s certainly safe for the entire family though older moviegoers (particularly tweens and older) may not connect to the movie in quite the same way. If you’re looking for one last trip to the theaters for your younger kids, consider joining Pete on his journey through the forest with Elliot, the dragon.
