My girl is starting to really be into cooking, baking, and having fun in the kitchen. Over the summer she found a love for the kitchen, testing out different recipes and helping me cook. When we found out that we’d be receiving Skyrocket Toys’ Candy Craft Chocolate Pen for review, we were both excited to play with chocolate and make cute designs. My baby boy was also excited and looking forward to making and eating his own chocolate! Read on to learn more about the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen and what the kids and I thought about it!
Skyrocket Toys’ Candy Craft Chocolate Pen {Review}
The Candy Craft Chocolate Pen allows you to make cute chocolate candies by either using the included molds or using the pen to draw or write your own creations. Made in the USA, it will be available this fall at Walmart and on Walmart.com for just under $30. You’ll find both the blue pen and the exclusive-to-Walmart pink pen, along with an exclusive set of holiday molds for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
In theory, the chocolate pen is an exciting concept. The idea of making your own chocolate, writing or drawing anything you want in various chocolate colors, and allowing kids to do so without having to melt their own chocolate, all sounds great. However, in all honesty, our experience with the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen was a bit frustrating, especially during set-up. My kids did have fun using the pen to fill the molds and try to create designs and text, but they were disappointed that the pen is not very user-friendly and that they needed a significant amount of my help. Additionally, my husband and I had quite a bit of trouble setting up and closing off the chocolate pouches to put inside the pen. So, while the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen states it’s designed for children ages 6 and up, I cannot imagine children being able to do that part on their own.
Writing and drawing with the chocolate pen is tricky – the pen continues to drip a bit after stopping it, so there’s a learning curve to get it to create the designs you want without making a mess. Both of my kids ended up creating mostly random abstract-like designs since it was difficult to actually draw with it. Perhaps we lack pastry decorating skills and others can get it to draw and write better than us, but we had a hard time even drawing a simple heart shape!
Despite our frustrations, my son and daughter did have fun playing with the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen. They liked the different colors of chocolate, the variety of designs in the molds, and the overall idea of creating and playing with food. Like I mentioned, it’s a fun concept; I just wish it worked better in application and was more user-friendly. Check out our quick video below so you can see how my kids had fun playing with their chocolate pen!
A couple of other things you’ll want to consider regarding the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen:
- The chocolate in the included pouches runs out pretty quickly.
- The instructions state that the pen tips, clamps, and caps are not reusable and should be tossed after one use.
- Refill pouches are available for purchase, as are a variety of kits to add to the creations you can make.
If your kids love being in the kitchen and crafting with food, then Skyrocket Toys’ Candy Craft Chocolate Pen may be a good gift idea for them. Just be sure to remember that some patience will likely be needed. But, who knows? You may have a better experience with your Candy Craft Chocolate Pen than we did! would you be able to tell me how to fill the pouches of the chocolate.. Can we buy a big bag of chocolates and melt them and use food coloring to color them or do we have to buy the pre made pouches that come with the pen and where do you buy the refills and for how much? any feedback is appreciated.. My son really wants this for christmas this year 🙂

Do not buy the chocolate pen unless you like disappointing children.
The chocolate hardens quickly and plugs the tips. The motor burnt out on the first tube/bag of icing.
Don’t waste your money.

Oh no! That wasn’t at all like our experience. We’ve used it at home and even had fun with the pen for our daughter’s birthday party!
