My “baby boy” recently turned four and is well on his way to being a big boy, though he’ll always and forever be my “baby boy.” His conversations have turned from the one-liners he used to give us as a toddler, to full-on conversations and inquiries. Just like his big sister, he’s turning out to be quite the inquisitive and reflective child – a perfect blend of characteristics inherited from my husband and me.
Before we get too far into his life as a preschooler, I wanted to reflect on past conversations we had with him as a two-year-old and three-year-old toddler. I’m sharing with you so you can smile today, but also so that I may remember them myself. He’s a pretty funny little man and has us laughing all the time. I hope that quality never goes away! So, without further introduction, here is a snippet of previous conversations with our toddler.
Conversations with Our Toddler
Food Sourcing
Him: Look, a chicken! (Points to live chicken on side of road.)
Me: Yeah, it is!
Him: Can we eat it?
On Eating
Me: You need to eat some food.
Him: No, I already have. See? (Pats belly.) Donuts in my belly!
In the Kitchen
Him: I get you butter.
Me: I don’t need any butter.
Him: I do!
Me: What do you need butter for?
Him: I don’t know.
Shopping Adventures
Him: Can we go to store?
Me: I don’t need to go to the store today.
Him: But, I do!
Me: You do? What do you need from the store?
Him: Macaroni.
Me: We have that at home.
Him: But, they have some at the store!
Me: Yes, they do. How are you going to buy stuff at the store? You have money?
Him: Can I have a coin? And a dollar.
Science Experiments
Him: Can I put this in the freezer? (Holding up a sponge.)
Me: Why? What happens if you put it in the freezer?
Him: It will turn into ice!
Using the Potty is Hard Work
Him: I’m tired of going potty.
Future Wishes
Him: I wish I could be a doctor when I grow up.
I know there have been many more curious statements or questions from my baby boy that I could share. And, there are bound to be many more now that he’s a four-year-old and as he continues to grow. One of my goals for this year is to continue to jot down his words as a keepsake for our family. So, don’t be surprised if I share conversations with our preschooler in the future!
