Over the last 8 years that I’ve been blogging, I’ve shared many reflections on what modern motherhood and being a modernmami means in my world. In fact, one of the reasons why I began this blog is because as a working mother, I know first-hand how challenging it can be to juggle all aspects of motherhood and life. Over the years, I’ve also shared various ideas, tips, and shortcuts that help me manage our household, all with the thought of helping other parents in the constant dance that is work-life-family balance. From the moment we wake up, to the moment we lay our heads back on our pillows, we are thinking about and running from one task to another. And, doesn’t the juggling act begin right in the morning when we have not only ourselves, but also our little ones to get up and ready to face the day ahead?
This is why I’m super excited to share that I’ve partnered with IKEA as a panelist for their new First :59 program! The IKEA First :59 program aims to help families (really, everyone!) address the challenge of those first 59 minutes in the day – because IKEA knows it’s still a work-in-progress in most households. In fact, they conducted a survey of individuals ages 18 and up living in the Continental US and found that 3 in 4 people don’t have a regular weekday morning routine. Additionally, IKEA found that 72% of survey respondents said a stressful morning affected the rest of their day; I’m sure you can agree with that, right? To help with the challenge of the morning routine, IKEA has put together the First :59 site, an accompanying Pinterest board, and a panel of 4 lifestyle and design bloggers (including me!) to help your morning routine go smoother. We will be sharing our own tips and ideas for how to make those first 59 minutes in your day easier, focusing on the bedroom and bathroom since that’s where we are getting ourselves ready!
I encourage you to visit the IKEA First :59 site to see some of our tips, follow the First :59 Pinterest board, and follow along on social media via #First59! You’ll get awesome tips like these I’ve already shared, plus many more to come and even more from fellow panel members!
- Each morning, I like to set the kids up with their breakfast first. This allows me some time to freshen up in the bathroom while they eat.
- Take advantage of laundry day to get a head start on the week ahead! As you fold, try picking out outfits for the kids for the entire week to help with each day’s morning routine.
- It’s important to our family that everyone pitch in. Our morning routine reflects that since everyone has their role, from brushing their own teeth and getting themselves dressed, to helping do a final check to ensure lights are turned off before we walk out the door.
What do the first 59 minutes of your day normally look like? Do you have any challenges in your morning routine you wish to improve?
Disclosure: As a panelist of the IKEA First :59 program, I have been compensated for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m not a Mom but I have a first 59 minutes of my day routine! Wake up. Put coffee on. Write 3 pages in journal. Drink coffee with healthy breakfast. Check emails/work on blog posts/etc. Shower!! Sometimes, there’s a run, meditation or yoga thrown in there. 😉

That sounds like a wonderful morning routine, Lora! One day, I hopefully can build journaling into my morning routine. 🙂

Our first 59 minutes do not look good. It doesn’t matter how early we get up, but we always seem to be rushing. I’m going to work on easing my boys into the day instead of saying “let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.”
Melanie Edwards says
Don’t I know it, Yvonne! Some days I still have to work on this, but with much practice and effort, I have little by little let go of saying, “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” LOL Preparing ahead of time definitely helps and goes a long way. Try it!

Oh my goodness! I’ve never analyzed my 1st 59… I need to! What a great way to see what needs to change in order to be more efficient and effective… even w/out a husband or kids. Love it. For now, mine are devotion, a convo with mom, coffee… I’m actually okay with that… It used to be straight to the computer and email… it takes me a good hour now to even turn my computer on. LOOOOVE that.

Your 1st 59 minutes sound great! I love that it has changed for you. Like you said, analyzing definitely helps put things in perspective. 🙂

The first 59 minutes of my day either involve running or blogging after laying in bed for about 30 minutes first. 😉
Melanie Edwards says
Ha! I love that!

Great tips Mel!!
I do similar things as well, I take care of myself first, like taking a shower, getting ready and then I wake up the kids or they get ready at the same time. While they’re eating breakfast I go do my makeup 🙂

We have to multitask, don’t we? It is often the only way to get things done, because we have SO much to accomplish!
