As 2014 gets underway, I’m sure many of you have made New Year’s Resolutions or goals for the year, some of which surely include taking better care of yourself. As busy parents, it’s easy to overlook our own health, since we’re focused on caring for our children, managing our households, and ensuring our work is complete on a daily basis. However, our health is of upmost importance and when it fails, it prevents us from being able to do that which we most focus on: taking care of our babies.
For that reason, last year I truly started to focus on taking better care of myself. I made it one of my goals for 2013 and it continues to be on my list for this year’s goals. I started paying more attention to signs of illness and was more proactive about going to the doctor for wellness visits and check-ups, not just when I was sick. I felt it was important to do this and it set a good example for my children too to show them that taking care of our health doesn’t just mean reacting when we get sick.
I remember having a conversation with my daughter about how our health depends on many things, from eating good and staying active, to monitoring our physical and mental wellbeing. This includes working together with a team of doctors that help us care for ourselves, since we are only knowledgeable about our own bodies to a certain extent. Seeing me going to doctor appointments even though I was not sick really helped my daughter understand more about the importance of taking care of yourself.
The OTCSafety team put together this fun infographic reminding us to take care of ourselves this year and showing some of the most common New Year’s resolutions most moms make this time of the year.
